To protect the Mersey sea wall from being undermined, 200m long groynes were constructed over exceedingly variable underlying materials. To prevent deep rotational slips occuring, a layer of high strength reinforcement geotextile was placed at the base of the groynes. The Polyester provided the required factor of safety against slip failure and functioned as a separator between the armour stone and the in-situ clay deposits.
